Introduction

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe.Based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, its central character is a masked figure who, concealed beneath the Paris Opera House, causes music to flow from the Phantoms Angel of Music to the soprano Christine Daaé.

The musical debuted in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical. The Lon Chaney Sr. film “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925) is sometimes cited as an inspiration for the musical.

The title character’s voice is provided by an off-stage narrator in all versions of the show except for webcasts prior to 2016, when American actor Norm Lewis took on the role. In the UK, Peter Joback played The Phantom in the 2004 revival and Ramin Karimloo played The Phantom in the 2016 West End revival, with Simon Thomas taking over from September 2018. In October 2018 it was announced that Karimloo would return to play The Phantom for a limited run from 5 February – 2 March 2019 as part of his final farewell tour dates before his retirement from playing The Phantom role.
