The Birth of the Phantom

The Making of the Mask
The success of the 1904 play “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux brought about a 1910film adaptation, a 1925 film adaptation, and numerous adaptations in other media. In preparation for the role of the Phantom, Michael Crawford took singing lessons for three months. He had originally auditioned for the role of Raoul, butWebber believed that he was better suited for the Phantom. Crawford’s voice was recorded live during each performance so that it could be used in the soundtrack album recording, which was released in 1987.
Sarah Brightman, who played Christine Daaé, had no prior theatrical experience before being cast in “The Phantom of the Opera”. She had originally auditioned for another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, “Cats”, but was cast as one of three possible Christines in “The Phantom of the Opera”.

The Fifth Night of The Phantom of the Opera begins with the voice of the phantom, as he is heard speaking to himself in his lair. He is angry and frustrated, and he has made a decision: “I have brought you here to show you what you have done! You have ruined my life!” He goes on to tell the story of how he was born into a family of nobility, but his deformities prevented him from ever being seen in society. He was forced to live in hidden away, where he learned to play the violin and developed a love for music. When his family died, he inherited their estate, but he was still not allowed to be seen in public.
The Sixth Night
The sixth night, also known as the Final Night, is the last performance of The Phantom of the Opera. It takes place on April 8, 1892.
