The Movie Version

The long-awaited music video for The Phantom of the Opera was finally released on YouTube today. The video, which is a little over three minutes long, was shot in a single take and features the entire cast of the upcoming movie.

The Plot

The year is 1881, and the Paris Opera House is in rehearsals for a new production of Verdi’s “Macbeth”. The lead tenor, Piangi, is found dead in his dressing room, his throat slashed. The managers of the show, Firmin and André, decide to keep the news of Piangi’s death a secret from the cast and crew so as not to ruin morale. However, Christine Daaé, the opera’s leading lady and Piangi’s understudy, is informed of his death by a mysterious voice.

Christine is immediately whisked away by her childhood friend Raoul de Chagny, who is now the Vicomte de Chagny and one of the opera house’s investors. He takes her to his family’s estate outside of Paris so she can recover from the shock. While there, Christine tells Raoul about her experiences with “the Angel of Music”, a spirit she has been hearing since she was a child. She believes this spirit to be her father, who died when she was very young.

The next day, Raoul returns to Paris and goes to see Firmin and André at the opera house. He tells them that he plans on taking Christine away from the opera house permanently. Firmin and André are shocked at this news and tell Raoul that they cannot allow him to do this. They explain that Christine is their best singer and that they need her for the show.

Raoul does not back down from his decision, and Firmin and André are forced to give in. They tell him that he can take Christine away after the show opens.

The opening night of “Macbeth” arrives, and everything goes according to plan until Piangi’s understudy forgets his lines. In a panic, Christine runs onstage to save the show. She sings beautifully, impressing everyone in the audience including Raoul.

After the show, Firmin and André approach Raoul backstage and tell him that they have changed their minds; he can take Christine away now if he wishes. However, Raoul has also been impressed by Christine’s singing and has decided to stay at the opera house with her.
