They’ve been in operation for over 20 years, and they’ve built a reputation for putting on shows that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.

A brief history

The Music Box Company was founded in 1888 by Oscar Wilde and Lillie Langtry. The company was one of the first to offer live music performances in San Francisco. The Music Box Company was known for its grandiose productions, which often featured live animals and special effects. The company’s most famous production was The Phantom of the Opera, which opened in San Francisco in 1909. The Phantom of the Opera was a huge success, and it helped put the Music Box Company on the map.

The company continued to produce successful shows throughout the 1910s and 1920s. In 1927, the Music Box Company was bought by Fox Film Corporation. Fox continued to produce films at the Music Box Theatre until 1962, when the theatre was sold to various private owners. Today, the theatre is owned by Live Nation and is one of San Francisco’s premier concert venues.

The set

The set for The Phantom of the Opera is impressive, to say the least. It is a large, three-story structure that takes up most of the stage. The first and second floors are taken up by the theater itself, while the third floor is reserved for the Phantom’s lair. The set is realistic and detailed, with authentic-looking props and furniture. It is also very creepy, with dark corners and hidden alcoves that create a sense of suspense and mystery.

The costumes

The costumes for the production were designed by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, who won an Academy Award for their work on the film version of The Phantom of the Opera. Gardiner said that she wanted the costumes to be “opulent but not over-the-top”, and that she was inspired by old photographs of Sarah Bernhardt, Edwin Booth, and other actors from the late 19th century.

The show’s producer, Cameron Mackintosh, was adamant that the look of the production should be faithful to Gaston Leroux’s original novel, and as such, demanded that Chappel and Gardiner design period-appropriate clothing. Many of the fabrics used in the costumes were specially woven to resemble those that would have been used in the late 1800s.

The reviews

The reviews of the San Francisco production of The Phantom of the Opera are in, and they are mixed. Some people loved it and thought it was a great production, while others thought it was just okay.
