History of the Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in volume form in late 1910 by Pierre Lafitte and became an instant bestseller.

The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a former ballet rehearsal room as a torture chamber. It also draws features from stage productions of works such as The Stranglehold (1899) and Robert Clément’s L’étrange histoire du fantôme de l’Opéra (1886).

The Story

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published in serial form in the newspaper Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in book form in 1910.

The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a young opera singer, Christine Daaé, who is terrorized by a mysterious figure known as “the phantom” who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. The phantom falls in love with Christine and abducted her to his underground lair. But as Christine begins to see through the phantom’s manipulations, she must decide whether to submit to his demands or risk everything to escape.

The novel has been adapted into numerous stage and screen productions, most notably Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which opened on Broadway in 1988 and was made into a film in 2004.

The Lyrics

“The Phantom of the Opera” is a song from the stage musical of the same name. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe.

The song was originally recorded by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley in 1986, for the musical’s cast recording. It was subsequently released as a single, reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart. In 2004, it was re-released as a duet between Brightman and Australian pop singer John Farnham, peaking at number 7.

The song is sung by the character of Christine Daaé, an opera singer who is being tutored by the “Phantom” – a masked man who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. The Phantom is in love with Christine, and declares his intention to make her a star.
