The Phantom of the Opera is a French opera in five acts by gaston Leroux. It was first performed at the Palais Garnier in Paris on January 25, 1910. The opera tells the story of a young soprano, Christine Daaé, who is terrorized by a phantom in the opera house where she works.
The story of the opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in book form in 1910 by Pierre Lafitte.
The story revolves around the beautiful soprano singer Christine Daaé, who is being tormented by an enigmatic figure known as the Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom falls in love with Christine and abducts her, holding her captive in his lair beneath the Paris Opera House. Although he is able to teach her how to sing perfectly, Christine is ultimately torn between her love for him and her fear of his dark side.
The novel has been adapted into numerous film and stage productions, the most famous of which is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical. The musical has been seen by over 130 million people in 145 different countries and has been translated into 21 languages.
The music of the opera
While much of the music in The Phantom of the Opera is very beautiful and haunting, it is also very demanding, both for the singers and the orchestra. Most of the music is written in a late Romantic style, with sweeping melodies and rich harmonies. The sheet was then donated to a charity auction in order to raise funds for said musical’s development. However, due to its sentimental value and great importance to the development of The Phantom of the Opera, the sheet was never put up for auction and instead stayed in the care of Lloyd Webber himself.

The most popular version is the one by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was used in the Broadway production of the musical. However, there are also versions by Gaston Leroux, which was used in the original French production, and by Claude-Michel Schönberg, which was used in the London production.
