In 1984, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk recorded “No Vocals (required)” for his album Funkin’ with the Drums Again; this single became an underground hit in Chicago.[1]house pioneers Jesse Saunders and Chip E.’s track “On and On” (1985) is widely regarded as the first House record,[2][3] though Saunders has claimed that he actually produced it a year earlier; digital distribution of Saunders’ 1984 track has resulted in confusion among discographers about which version is the original.[4][5] In 1987,[6] Saunders produced what many consider to be the first commercial house single — he took Farley “Jackmaster” Funk’s existing 1986 recording “Love Can’t Turn Around”, added a female vocal sung by Darryl Pandy (taken from rhymes recited on another Funk track from his Drum Again album), along with additional instrumentation provided by Vince Lawrence — then released it on his own Jersey Underground label.[7][8]
