His Life

He composed operas, ballets and other pieces of music. His best-known works include the operas Halka and The Haunted Manor, as well as the song “The Merry Widow”.

Moniuszko died in Warsaw in 1872.

His Music

Stanislaw Moniuszko was born in 1819 into a gentry family in Lizbony, a small village near Plock. He attended the Warsaw Lyceum and subsequently studied law at Vilnius University. While still a student, he became interested in music and began to compose. In 1839, he left university and went to Italy to study composition with Carlo Pedrotti in Verona. He also studied with Vincenzo Bellini in Naples.

Moniuszko’s compositions began to be performed while he was still in Italy. In 1841, his opera Halka was premiered at the Teatro Carcano in Milan to great success. The work established Moniuszko’s reputation as a composer of operas, and he became known as the “Polish Mozart.” He returned to Poland in 1842 and continued to compose operas, as well as songs, choral works, and instrumental pieces.

Moniuszko’s popularity increased rapidly; his opera The Ghost of Redmond was performed over 100 times in Warsaw alone within a few years of its premiere. However, his greatest success came with the opera Straszny Dwor (The Haunted Manor), which premiered at the Warsaw Opera in 1860. The opera was hugely popular and is still frequently performed today.

Moniuszko died suddenly in June 1872 while on vacation in supervising the production of his latest opera, Hrabina (The Countess). He is buried at Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.
