Do They Know It’s Christmas?- Band Aid
“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is a song written in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in reaction to television reports of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. It was first recorded in a day on 25 November 1984 by Band Aid, a supergroup put together by Geldof, and was accompanied by a widely known advertising campaign. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released on 29 November 1984, with the proceeds being split between Band Aid’s Feed the World fund and Comic Relief. The song was written in one day after watching news reports of the famine that necessitated it; Geldof contacted numerous fellow pop stars, most of whom quickly agreed to record it with him. Record producer Chris Thomas was quick to produce the song. In its original incarnation, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was recorded as a benefit single intended to raise money for relief of widespread famine in Ethiopia; according to Bob Geldof’s liner notes for the 1994 re-release, the idea came to him “in an idle moment” while he watched TV coverage of Ethiopia during Live Aid on 13 July 1985. The single also led both Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to found the charity supergroup Band Aid and organise Live Aid the following year
