The Doors – Strange Days
The Doors were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. The band got its name at Morrison’s suggestion from the title of Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception, which itself was a reference to a quote by William Blake.
They were unique and among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s because of Morrison’s cryptic lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. After isolating themselves in an old house in Hollywood’s Laurel Canyon for nine months writing songs, they gained a reputation for their live performances, which featured theatricality, long improvised passages, psychedelic light shows and run-ins with the police.
Their debut album featuring their breakthrough single “Light My Fire” was one of the six top-selling albums in 1967 and has become one of the most enduring classics of the rock era. Strange Days (1967), their second album, sold nearly as well and contained their hit singles “People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times”. The group achieved commercial success with their next two releases: Waiting for the Sun (1968) and The Soft Parade (1969). Morrison died at age 27 in 1971. Following extensive media coverage of his alleged drug abuse and erratic behavior during concerts—as well as the resulting decline in ticket sales—the remaining members decided to continue as a trio until they disbanded in 1973.
The Doors were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Rolling Stone ranked them No. 41 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. In 2002, Morrison was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with Manzarek and Krieger accepting on behalf of themselves and Densmore.
