The Doors
Tour Dates
The Doors are an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were one of the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s and 1970s, mostly because of Morrison’s lyrics and stage antics, and the group was widely regarded as an important part of the counterculture of the 1960s.
The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception (1954), which itself was a reference to a line in William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790). They were among the first American bands to call themselves “psychedelic rock”, using drugs such as LSD and peyote in their live performances. Their debut album, The Doors (1967), released by Elektra Records, charted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced their most well-known singles – “Light My Fire” and “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”.
The Doors continued to release eight more studio albums before Morrison’s death at age 27 in 1971. Two of these albums, Strange Days (1967) and Waiting for the Sun (1968), were nominated for Grammy Awards. Their popularity was challenged by critical reaction during much of their career; nonetheless The Doors remained commercially successful throughout most of that period with number-one hits including “Hello, I Love You”, “Touch Me”, “People Are Strange”, “Love Me Two Times” as well as sold out concerts worldwide. Since Morrison’s death, surviving members have been active sometimes on their own or regrouping as The Doors Of The 21st Century with a different lead vocalist; this band toured extensively from 2002 to 2013 but experienced controversies revolving around legal issues stemming from Densmore refusing to allow them to tour under the name without his consent.

The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly because of Morrison’s lyrics and voice along with his erratic stage persona. After Morrison’s death in 1971 at the age of 27, the remaining members continued as a trio until finally disbanding in 1973.
While their first album-length release, The Doors (1967), produced their best-known hits “Light My Fire” and “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”, the band’s later work featured a heavier, more challenging sound that incorporated elements of hard rock, jazz, acid rock, and blues-rock. Much of The Doors’ catalog remains popular among music fans today despite little radio airplay or support from major labels in their lifetime; they have sold over 100 million records worldwide.
The Doors were ranked number 41 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. Morrison was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Doors in 1993.
