A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae”, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady. Reggae is deeply linked to Rastafarianism and emanates from black culture in Jamaica.

Reggae developed from an earlier form of Jamaican popular music, ska, which originated in Cuba with elements of African and Latin American music. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat, guitars played with staccato chords, organ, horns playing catchy melodic riffs, sometimes accompanied by sustained saxophone solos. In 1967, Jamaican musicians created what they called “The Wailers sound”, named after one of their biggest early hits – The Wailers’ “Simmer Down”. According to British reggae historian Steve Barrow, ska was “the last great gasp” for Jamaican independents hoping for major-label success: though it initially looked promising for producers such as Duke Reid (with hits such as 1963’s “The Guns Of Navarone”), rocksteady was quickly coopted by upstarts such as Coxsone Dodd (whoreleased hit records by Alton Ellisand Ken Boothe) or Leslie Kong(who had success with The Melodians).
