Opening day
On September 1st, 1998, Schafer’s House of Music opened its doors to the public for the first time. It was a momentous occasion for owner and founder, Craig Schafer. Craig had a love for music that started at a young age and he dreamed of one day owning his own music store.
Now, 20 years later, Schafer’s House of Music is still going strong. It has become a staple in the community and a go-to spot for music lovers of all ages. From guitars and drums to keyboards and PA systems, Schafer’s House of Music has everything you need to make your musical dreams come true.
Craig’s son, Dylan, now runs the day-to-day operations of the store but Craig can still be found there from time to time, sharing his love of music with everyone who comes through the door.
First store
The first Schafer’s House of Music was opened in July, 1965, on the corner of Division Street and Clark Street in Chicago. Originally a small storefront, Schafer’s quickly became known as the go-to place for music lovers looking for hard-to-find records and musical instruments.
In the early days, Schafer’s was open until 2:00am, and was often packed with people browsing the racks of records or trying out the instruments. The store became a gathering place for music fans, and many friendships were formed there.
