Early Life and Career

Sonny John Moore, better known by his stage name Skrillex, is an American electronic dance music producer, DJ, singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence in the late 2000s as the front man of the electro-house band From First to Last. He began his solo career in 2007 and released his debut EP, My Name Is Skrillex, in 2010. He has since released four more EPs and three studio albums.

Skrillex was born on January 15, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. He is of English and Scottish descent. His parents divorced when he was two years old; he then moved with his mother to San Francisco at the age of six. At the age of fourteen he moved back to Los Angeles with his father. He attended a number of schools in the Los Angeles area before dropping out of high school at sixteen.

Skrillex began producing music while still in high school. His first release was a 2006 EP titled Believen’ Stars under the name Skrillex which contained remixes of tracks by indie rock band From First to Last as well as original songs. In 2007 he joined From First to Last as their lead singer after the departure of previous vocalist Trevor O’Donnell but left the band later that year to pursue a solo career.

Mainstream Success

While Skrillex’s early releases had been popular within the underground dubstep community, it wasn’t until 2010 that he found mainstream success. That year, he released several singles including “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” and “Kill Everybody.” These songs would go on to become two of his most iconic tracks, helping to launch him into the mainstream spotlight.

Since then, Skrillex has continued to produce hits, both as a solo artist and as part of the duo Jack U (with Diplo). He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Justin Bieber, Korn, and Rihanna. In 2011, he won 3 Grammy Awards for his work on sprints “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” and “Bangarang.” He has also been nominated for 6 additional Grammy Awards.

Skrillex’s success has helped to popularize electronic dance music (EDM) among younger audiences. His high-energy live shows are often compared to those of rock bands, and he has frequently been credited with bringing EDM to a wider audience. In 2012, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Controversies

Since hitting the mainstream, Skrillex has been no stranger to controversy.
In 2012, he was accused of plagiarism by Canadian producer Deadmau5, after Skrillex released a remix of the song “Cinema” that Deadmau5 claimed sounded too similar to his own work. Skrillex denied the accusations, saying that he had only borrowed “the rhythm and top-line melody” from Deadmau5’s track.

In 2013, an Armenian metal band called Soil impart sued Skrillex for copyright infringement, claiming that he had used parts of their song “ZarUM” in his own track “Full Speed.” However, a judge later ruled in favor of Skrillex, saying that the similarity between the two songs was not enough to constitute copyright infringement.

Skrillex has also been criticized for his use of sampling in his music. In particular, hip-hop producer Hudson Mohawke accused him of stealing a sample from one of his tracks and using it without permission in Skrillex’s song “Humble.” Despite the controversy, “Humble” went on to become a huge hit, reaching the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
