The Ryman is known as the “Mother Church of Country Music.”

The Ryman Auditorium is a 2,362-seat live performance venue located at 116 5th Avenue North, in Nashville, Tennessee. It is best known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974 and is owned and operated by Opry Entertainment (a division of Gaylord Entertainment Company). It is also known as “The Mother Church of Country Music” because of its long association with country music and because many well-known country music performers got their start there. The Ryman Auditorium was also the first radio broadcasting location for what would become the Grand Ole Opry in 1925.

The Ryman Auditorium was designed by noted Nashville architect Henry Hibbs in 1892 as a multipurpose theater for lectures, dances, pageants, and other events. The auditorium originally seated 2,400 people and was opened on September 18, 1892. A fire destroyed the original building in 1923, and it was rebuilt in 1924. The new auditorium seat 2,362 people and opened on June 1, 1924.

In 1943, the Grand Ole Opry moved to the Ryman Auditorium from its previous location at the Dixie Tabernacle in East Nashville. The radio show had outgrown its previous home and needed a larger venue to accommodate its growing audience. The Ryman Auditorium proved to be an ideal location for the show due to its excellent acoustics (it was nicknamed “the Carnegie Hall of the South”) and its central location in downtown Nashville. The Grand Ole Opry remained at the Ryman Auditorium until 1974 when it moved to a larger venue (now known as the Grand Ole Opry House) on Nashville’s outskirts.

The Ryman Auditorium continued to host musical acts after the departure of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1989, country music singer Vince Gill headlined a concert at the Ryman Auditorium that raised over $1 million for charity. In 1994, bluegrass singer Alison Krauss & Union Station made their first live album at the Ryman Auditorium. In 2003, rock band Kings of Leon released their album Youth & Young Manhood which was recorded live at the Ryman Auditorium during two nights in May 2003; Kings of Leon would go on to headline four sold-out shows at theRyman Auditorium in September 2010
