What is the Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year?

The Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year is an award presented to recording artists for quality mixtapes released throughout the year. This award was first presented in 2009 at the 19th annual Soul Train Music Awards ceremony and has been given out every year since. Mixtapes are a type of album that is generally free of charge and consists of various songs that are mixed together by a DJ or producer.

History of the Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year

The Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year has been given out since 2008, to honor the best album mixtapes released within the hip hop, rap and R&B genres. The award is given out annually at the Soul Train Music Awards, which are hosted by BET Networks.

The award was first given out in 2008, at the 19th annual Soul Train Music Awards. The award was presented to DJ Drama, for his album Gangsta Grillz: The Album (Vol. 2), which was released on May 8, 2007. In 2009, the award was renamed to Best Hip Hop Mixtape Album, and was won by Kid Cudi, for his mixtape A Kid Named Cudi, which was released on July 17, 2008.

In 2010, the award reverted back to its original name, and was won by Wiz Khalifa, for his mixtape Kush & Orange Juice, which was released on April 14, 2010. In 2011 and 2012, the award was won by Lil Wayne, for his albums I Am Not a Human Being and I Am Not a Human Being II respectively. In 2013 and 2014, the award went to Drake for his albums So Far Gone and If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late respectively.

In 2015 and 2016m the award was won by Future for his mixtapes 56 Nights and Beast Mode respectively.Most recently in 2017, Kendrick Lamar won the award for his album DAMN..

How the Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year is judged

In order to be eligible for the Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year, the album or mixtape must have been released within the eligibility period. The album or mixtape must also contain at least five newly recorded and previously unreleased songs. Albums or mixtapes that are compilations of previously released material are not eligible.

The nominees for the Soul Train Music Award for Album Mixtape of the Year are chosen by a panel of music industry experts. The winner is then selected by voter ballot.
