The Best and Brightest at the Soul Train Music Awards 2013

The 2013 Soul Train Music Awards celebrated the best and brightest in music this year. The show was hosted by actor/comedian Dave Chappelle and musical performances by some of the biggest names in the industry. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the show.

The night’s big winners

The Soul Train Music Awards were held last night in Las Vegas, and it was a star-studded event! The night’s big winners were Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, and Macklemore & RyanLewis, who all took home multiple awards. Here are the night’s highlights:

-Kendrick Lamar won Best R&B/Soul Male Artist, as well as Album of the Year for good kid, m.A.A.d city. He also gave an electrifying performance of “Alright” that had the crowd on their feet.
-Justin Timberlake was named Best R&B/Soul Male Artist, and he also won Video of the Year for “Suit & Tie.” Timberlake wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, but he did send a special video message thanking his fans.
-Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won several awards, including Song of the Year for “Thrift Shop” and Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year for “Can’t Hold Us.” They also gave a powerful performance of “Same Love” that featured Queen Latifah officiating a mass wedding of 33 couples.
-Other winners included Bruno Mars, Ciara, Janelle Monáe, Fantasia, Tyler Perry, Ledisi, Tamar Braxton, and more.

The evening’s standout performances

The 2013 Soul Train Music Awards were held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night (Nov. 10), and as always, the show was packed with stellar musical performances.

Among the evening’s standout sets were Vivian Green’s sultry take on her single “Beautiful,” which found the singer surrounded by a bevy of topless, painted-on dancers; John Legend’s performance of his current single “All of Me,” which was dedicated to his wife Chrissy Teigen; and Mack Wilds’ stirring medley of his hits “Own It” and “Henny.”

Other highlights included a soulful duet between Brandy and Monica on the classic R&B hit “The Boy Is Mine” (complete with a dance-off between the two singers); Tamar Braxton’s show-stopping performance of her new single “Love and War”; and a tribute to the late Luther Vandross featuring Ledisi, Angie Stone, Kelly Price, Ruben Studdard and Smokey Robinson.

The night’s big winners included Justin Timberlake, who took home the Grammy for Best Male R&B Artist, and Ciara, who won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Artist. Timberlake also won the award for Best R&B Performance for his song “Suit & Tie.” Other winners included Bruno Mars, who won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
