The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain Georg von Trapp.
The Story
The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she deciding whether or not to become a nun. She falls in love with the widowed father, Georg von Trapp, and together they have seven children. When Nazi Germany annexes Austria, Georg is drafted into the German Navy, and he and his family attempt to flee to Switzerland.
The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959 and was an instant success. It was adapted into a highly successful 1965 film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. The musical has been revived several times on Broadway and elsewhere, and has been made into several television specials, two companion albums and two movie sequels.

The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened in 1959 and was immensely popular, running for 1,443 performances. The 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was an even bigger box office hit, grossing more than $158 million worldwide.
