The Sound of Music is an Rodgers and Hammerstein musical with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The show originally opened on Broadway in 1959, and the 1965 film version, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Academy Awards. The Virginia Opera will be performing The Sound of Music from February 7-9, 2020.

The Story

The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. The story is set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938. The musical tells of the experiences of Maria von Trapp, a young Austrian woman who leaves an abusive marriage to become a governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval officer. She falls in love with Georg, and they are married.

The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959 and was adapted for film in 1965. The film version, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Academy Awards and was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most financially successful work. The 2015 live television production starring Carrie Underwood was seen by more than 18 million viewers on NBC.

The Music

The Sound of Music enjoyed enormous success as a live television event, a Broadway musical, an Academy Award-winning film, and finally, an opera. The 2015 Virginia Opera production will be the first time that Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic will be performed as an opera.

The music of The Sound of Music has been composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is the successor to their collaboration. The score consists of several lieder, which are German songs for voice and piano; orchestral pieces; and church music. The story is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, named The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

George Darden sang Georg von Trapp, Victoria Livengood was Maria von Trapp, and Emily Pulley was Mother Abbess.

The Sound of Music Virginia Opera Production will be directed by Artistic Director Mark Streshinsky with Conductor Sarah Hickler leading the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
