The Gaither Vocal Band – Because He Lives

The Gaither Vocal Band is an American southern gospel vocal group, named after its founder and leader Bill Gaither. On March 1, 2017, it was announced that the group had elected to disband, following the departure of singer Adam Crabb.

The Gaither Vocal Band was formed in 1980 by then bass singer Gary McSpadden and tenor Ivan Parker, who both left the Bill Gaither Trio. Prior to this, they had been touring with Bill Gaither as backup vocalists. When they left the Trio, they were replaced by Jim Murray (tenor) and Mark Lowry (baritone). Murray’s tenure would be short-lived, however; upon his departure in 1982 he was replaced by Steve Green.

The lineup would change several more times over the next few years; in 1984, Jonathan Pierce joined as baritone, followed by Russ Taff as lead singer in 1986. In 1988, Green left to pursue a solo career (to be replaced by Lee Young) and McSpadden rejoined shortly thereafter. This lineup would remain intact until 1992; during that year Taff left to join the Imperials (to be replaced by Kirk Talley), Parker departed (replaced first by Michael English and then Jake Hess), and Pierce quit (replaced first by Jon Mohr and then Herb Trace). In 1994 Hess also quit (replaced again by English), with Hess’ son Wes joining shortly thereafter. In 1996 Hess returned (replacing English), along with baritone David Phelps; Trace departed in 1999 (replaced temporarily by Marshall Hall) while Brian Free joined as tenor at around the same time Phelps had originally joined. In 2000 Tim Huskey replaced Hall/Mohr on bass; meanwhile Hess quit again in 2002 but returned once again in 2003. Huskey left in 2006 and was replaced first by Wes Hampton, then later Aaron Williams; Phelps departed in 2009 to focus on his solo career and was ultimately replaced by Adam Crabb. In early 2017 it was announced that both Crabb and Taff were leaving the group; Crabb stated that he needed “a break from life on the road”, while Taff said that he wanted to focus on writing songs rather than performing them. The group elected to disband rather than replace them.
