The year was 1974. Nixon was president, the Watergate scandal was unfolding, and the country was in the throes of a recession. Amidst all this tumult, Steve Gumbrecht had a vision. He saw a need for a music store in his hometown of St. Charles, Missouri that would cater to the needs of regional musicians. And so, with $5,000 in savings and a lot of ambition, he opened the doors to the first St. Charles Music House.
Forty-six years later, the Music House is still going strong. It has weathered recessions, competition from big box stores and online retailers, and even a devastating fire that destroyed much of its inventory. Through it all, the Music House has remained true to its roots as a one-stop shop for music lovers of all stripes. From instruments and equipment to lessons and repairs, they have everything you need to pursue your passion for music.
First store in St. Charles, Missouri
In 1946, Harold and Lucille Niederjohn opened the first music store in St. Charles, Missouri. The Niederjohns were music teachers who saw a need for a music store in their community. They originally sold band and orchestra instruments, sheet music, and records. The Niederjohns’ son, Bob, joined the business in the 1960s. Under his leadership, the store expanded its inventory to include guitars, drums, and other musical instruments and accessories.
