St. Louis’s History with the NHL

St. Louis has been a beloved city for the NHL since the league’s beginning. The city has a strong hockey history, dating back to the early 1900s. The St. Louis Blues are one of the most iconic teams in the NHL, and the city has a long-standing tradition of supporting its team.

St. Louis’s first NHL team

The St. Louis Blues are a professional ice hockey team in St. Louis, Missouri. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team is named after the famous W.C. Handy song “Saint Louis Blues,” and plays in the Enterprise Center in downtown St. Louis. The franchise was founded in 1967 as an expansion team during the league’s original expansion from six to twelve teams. The Blues are the last of the expansion teams to win the Stanley Cup, which they did in 2019.

The “Original Six” years

The St. Louis Blues were one of the “Original Six” NHL teams, along with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. These six teams made up the NHL from 1942 until 1967, when the league doubled in size with the addition of six new teams. The Original Six era is considered by many to be the golden age of hockey.

The St. Louis Blues were founded in 1967 and played their first game on October 11, 1967 against the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars). The Blues lost that game 2-1, but went on to have a very successful inaugural season. They finished first in their division and made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games.

Despite their early success, the Blues went through some tough times in their early years. They failed to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final until 1970, when they again lost to the Montreal Canadiens. They then went through a 28-year playoff drought from 1971 until 1999. During that time, they had some great players, such as Bernie Federko, Brett Hull and Al MacInnis, but they were never able to put it all together and make a deep playoff run.

Finally, in 1999, everything came together for the Blues. Led by Hull andMacInnis, they made it all the way back to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 29 years. Unfortunately, they ran into a red-hot Dallas Stars team that was too much for them to handle and ended up losing in six games.

Despite coming up just short of winning a Stanley Cup, that 1999 team helped reignite the passion for hockey in St. Louis and laid the groundwork for future success.

St. Louis’s second NHL team

In 1967, the NHL doubled in size from six to 12 teams with the addition of the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues and Oakland Seals. The St. Louis Blues were originally slated to start play in the 1967-68 season, but the NHL postponed their inaugural season until 1968-69 due to construction delays at the St. Louis Arena.

In their first season, the Blues finished last in the West Division with a dismal record of 15-31-6. The team’s struggles continued over the next few seasons as they failed to qualify for the playoffs in their first three years of existence. Thankfully for Blues fans, things began to turn around in 1971-72 when St. Louis posted its first winning record in franchise history (34-29-11) and qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time.

The St. Louis Blues’ Rivalries

The St. Louis Blues have been playing in the NHL since 1967 and have had many rivals throughout their history. The most notable rivals of the Blues are the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings. The Blues have also had heated rivalries with the Dallas Stars, the Minnesota Wild, and the Nashville Predators.

The Chicago Blackhawks

The St. Louis Blues have a long-standing rivalry with the Chicago Blackhawks. The two teams have been battling it out on the ice for over 50 years and the competition is as fierce as ever.

The Blackhawks are one of the Original Six teams in the NHL, so they have a lot of history with the Blues. The two teams first met in 1967, when the Blues were an expansion team.Since then, they’ve met four times in the playoffs, with the Blackhawks winning three of those series.

The most recent playoff meeting between these two rivals was in 2014, when the Blackhawks beat the Blues in six games. That series was especially intense, with three of the games going to overtime.

This rivalry is definitely one to watch!

The Nashville Predators

The St. Louis Blues and the Nashville Predators have been natural rivals since the Predators entered the NHL as an expansion team in 1998. The two teams are separated by just over 400 miles, and they have been division rivals since the Predators joined the Central Division in 1998.

The rivalry has been particularly heated since the 2014-15 season, when the Blues and the Predators met in the first round of the playoffs. The Blues won that series in six games, but the Predators have gotten revenge by winning three straight playoff series against the Blues, including a six-game victory in last year’s conference semifinals.

This season, the Blues and the Predators are once again battling for first place in the Central Division. The two teams have already met four times this season, with each team winning twice. The next meeting between these two rivals will take place on January 10th in Nashville.

The Detroit Red Wings

The Future of the St. Louis Blues

The team’s prospects

With the recent success of the St. Louis Blues, fans are wondering what the future holds for the team. The answer, though uncertain, looks bright.

The team has a core of young talent that includes forwards Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz, as well as defenseman Colton Parayko. All three players are 25 years old or younger and are already among the best at their respective positions. They should only get better with time, meaning the Blues should be contenders for years to come.

In addition to those three, the Blues have a number of other young players who could make an impact in the future. Forwards Robby Fabbri and Tage Thompson, as well as defenseman Vince Dunn, are all 21 years old or younger and have shown promise. If any of them can reach their potential, the Blues will be even more dangerous in the years to come.

Of course, it’s not all sunny skies for the Blues. Goaltender Jake Allen has been inconsistent throughout his career and is currently going through a rough patch. The team also doesn’t have a ton of depth at forward, so they could be in trouble if any of their top guys get hurt.

Still, there’s reason to believe the Blues will be one of the best teams in the league for years to come. With a core of young talent and some promising prospects in the pipeline, they have everything they need to become a dynasty.

The team’s potential

The St. Louis Blues have been one of the best teams in the NHL over the past few seasons. They have made the playoffs in each of the last four seasons and have won the Central Division twice in that span. The Blues have been led by a core group of players that includes captain David Backes, forwards Alexander Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko, and goaltender Brian Elliott. These players have helped the team to become one of the most consistent teams in the league.

The future of the Blues looks bright as well. Tarasenko is still only 24 years old and is already one of the best players in the league. He has scored 30 or more goals in each of his first three NHL seasons and has shown no signs of slowing down. Elliott has been one of the best goaltenders in the league over the past few seasons and should continue to be a key player for the Blues going forward.

The Blues also have a number of young players who are beginning to make an impact at the NHL level. Forward Jaden Schwartz is only 23 years old but he has already scored 20 or more goals in two of his three NHL seasons. Forward Robby Fabbri is only 20 years old but he played a key role for the Blues during their playoff run last season, scoring five goals and eight points in 11 games.

The future is bright for the St. Louis Blues.
