The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a type of music, was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno and Chicago hard house are the two most common and widely known.
The music is often repetitive or percussive, and often features synthetic sounds created with computers and electronic instruments.
