What is Techno?
Techno is a type of electronic dance music that originated in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States in the mid-to-late 1980s. The first techno tracks were produced by English producer Adrian Sherwood and American producer Juan Atkins. Atkins is often credited with being the “father of techno,” as he was one of the first producers to use synthesizers and drum machines to create tracks that were purely electronic.
The Origins of Techno
Techno is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which other subgenres have been built.
In 1984, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Derrick May formed the group Cybotron, and released their debut album Enter (1987). The album’s single “Clear” became a club hit in Europe and Australia. Cybotron’s sound was a fusion of electro and funk. Influenced by Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Phil Collins’s work with Peter Gabriel, and Yellow Magic Orchestra’s use of synthesizers and drum machines, they created an updated version of electro for the 1980s.
The Mayday rave in Berlin during 1991 was one of the first commercially successful techno events. It inspired subsequent acid house and rave parties around the world during the early 1990s.

Early techno was characterized by repetitive beats, synthesizer melodies, and often futuristic themes. It was popularized by DJs such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Jeff Mills, who were part of the second wave of Detroit techno artists. By the early 1990s, techno had spread to other countries and was being produced by artists such as Sven Vath and Richie Hawtin.
In the mid-1990s, a new wave of techno artists emerged, including Manu le Malin, Umek, and Dave Clarke. This new generation continued to experiment with the sound of techno, incorporating influences from other genres such as house music and drum & bass. By the end of the 1990s, a more commercial form of techno known as trance had become popular. In the 2000s and 2010s, techno has continued to evolve, with artists such as Cari Lekebusch and Marc Houle helping to shape the sound of the genre.
