The Modern Jazz Quartet
The Modern Jazz Quartet was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played until 1974. For much of their career, the group was composed of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie’s big band from 1946 to 1950, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke. They recorded over 30 albums during their career.

Volume 3 features the quartet performing four standards: “I’ll Remember April”, “Body and Soul”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, and “Lover Man”. The first two tracks also feature bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay.
The album was recorded at the height of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s popularity and is considered one of their best live albums. It is also one of the earliest live recordings of the group, predating their live album At Carnegie Hall by two years.

The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played for more than forty years. The group was formed by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The band played in a variety of styles, but their best-known work was in the cool jazz genre.
The MJQ released their first album, The Modern Jazz Quartet, in 1952 on the Atlantic label. The album features eight original compositions by Lewis and Jackson, as well as two standards, “I’ll Remember April” and “Django”. The MJQ’s second album, At Music Inn, Volume 2, was recorded live at the Music Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts and released in 1957. The album features four original compositions by Lewis and Jackson, as well as three standards: “Lullaby of Birdland”, “I Should Care”, and “Autumn Leaves”.
The MJQ continued to record and perform together until 1974, when they disbanded. They reunited in 1981 and continued to perform and record together until 1993.
