The phantom’s true identity is Erik, a deformed man who was born grotesquely disfigured and abandoned by his mother at birth. Christine Daaé is a beautiful young soprano who has been hired by the Paris opera company. She is taken under the wing of La Carlotta, the prima donna of the opera company. However, La Carlotta quits after suffering from stage fright during a performance, leaving Christine as the only option for the lead role in the upcoming production of Verdi’s “Don Carlos.”

Erik becomes obsessed with Christine and begins to haunt her dreams. He starts to write her love letters and send her flowers anonymously. When she finds out that it is Erik who has been sending her these gifts, she is initially scared but then starts to feel pity for him. She agrees to meet him backstage after one of her performances.

Erik reveals himself to Christine and asks her to run away with him. She agrees but then changes her mind after Erik shows her his deformed face. Heartbroken, Erik kidnap Christine and takes her back to his lair underneath the Opera House where he plans to keep her forever as his prisoner bride.
