The Story

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. The book was originally published as a serialization in Harper’s Bazar from September 1887 to December 1888. The novel tells the story of a young soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius known as “The Phantom” who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House. In order to keep her as his protégée, he terrorizes the Opera’s management and patrons.

The Characters

The Opera is set in Paris in the late 1800’s. The story revolves around the Phantom, a deformed man who lives in the catacombs of the Opera House. The Phantom is in love with Christine, a young singer. When Christine is engaged to Raoul, the Phantom’s jealousy leads him to take her captive.

Erik

Erik is the main character and protagonist of Leroux’s novel. He is also known as “The Phantom” or “The Opera Ghost”. Erik was born with a deformed face which caused his mother to die in childbirth and his father to abandon him. He was left to fend for himself and eventually found shelter in the Paris Opera House, where he lived in secret for many years. Erik is a musical genius and an excellent architect, but he is forced to live in the shadows because of his deformity. He develops a love for Christine, a young opera singer, and becomes obsessed with making her a star. However, his feelings are not reciprocated and she eventually falls in love with Raoul, a young man from her past. This sets off a chain of events that leads to tragedy.

Christine

Christine is the female protagonist in “The Phantom of the Opera”. She is a beautiful soprano, who has been taken under the wing of the “Opera Ghost”. The Ghost, also known as Erik, is an accomplished musician and composer. He falls in love with Christine and provides her with musical guidance, which propels her career. Eventually, Christine discovers that Erik is the Phantom and she must choose between her love for him and her duty to Raoul.

The Phantom’s Voice

The voice of the Phantom is one of the most iconic aspects of the character. In the original novel, the Phantom’s voice is described as being “hissing and whispery,” and “like a snake’s.” In subsequent adaptations, the voice has been depicted as sounding like that of a classical singer or opera singer. The Point of No Return

The “Point of No Return” is the name of a song from the musical The Phantom of the Opera. The song is sung by the Phantom, outside Christine’s dressing room door, as he tells her that she has reached the point of no return in their relationship and that he will be taking her away with him.

The Ending
