Al Green

Al Green was born in Forrest City, Arkansas, on April 13, 1946. His father, a sharecropper and Baptist minister, died when Green was only ten years old; his mother later worked as a maid. Green began singing gospel music in his church choir at the age of nine and first performed professionally with the legendary gospel group the Soul Stirrers when he was only nineteen. He left gospel music in 1966 to pursue a career in secular soul music.

Green’s first big hit was “Tired of Being Alone,” which reached number eleven on the pop charts and number one on the R&B charts in 1971. “Let’s Stay Together” followed in 1972, topping both the pop and R&B charts and becoming one of Green’s signature songs. In 1973, he had another major hit with “I’m Still in Love with You.”

Green’s career took a turn in the late 1970s when he abandoned secular soul music for a return to his gospel roots. His newfound religious convictions were reflected in such songs as “God Is Love” and “Almighty Fire (Will Burn).” He continued to enjoy success on the pop and R&B charts throughout the 1980s and 1990s with such hits as “Love and Happiness,” “Here I Am (Come and Take Me),” “The Power of Love,” and “Your Heart’s in Good Hands.” In 1995, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In recent years, his work has attained an even higher level of regard; he is now widely recognized as one of the 20th century’s most important and influential pop songwriters and performers.

Mayfield began his musical career as a teenager, singing gospel music in local churches. In 1957, he joined The Impressions—then featuringJerry Butler—as the group’s guitarist. The following year, The Impressions had their first major hit with “For Your Precious Love,” which reached number three on the R&B charts and number 11 on the pop charts. Over the next few years, The Impressions had a string of hits, including “He Will Break Your Heart” (1960), “Gypsy Woman” (1961), “It’s All Right” (1963), and “Keep On Pushing” (1964), all of which featured Mayfield’s distinctive lead vocals and guitar work.

In 1964, Mayfield wrote and produced The Impressions’ landmark albumThe Times We Had, which included such social commentary as “Choice of Colors” and “I’m So Proud.” This was only the beginning of Mayfield’s growing focus on using music to speak out against social injustice; later that year, he wrote and recorded “People Get Ready,” one of the most beautifully eloquent political statements ever made in pop music.
