In 1966, Tammy moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in country music. She soon met country music producer Billy Sherrill. Sherrill helped her get a recording contract with Epic Records. Tammy’s first single, “Apartment # 9,” was released in 1966. It did not do well commercially. However, her second single, “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad,” was a huge success, reaching the top of the country charts. Tammy continued to have success with such singles as “Stand by Your Man,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” and “He Turns My Teardrops to Wine.” She became one of the most popular country singers of the 1970s.

In 1969, Tammy married country singer George Jones. The couple had one child together but divorced in 1975. Despite their divorce, they continued to sing together on occasion and recorded several duets, including “We’re Gonna Hold On” and “Golden Ring.”
