In this blog post, we’ll be discussing who made pop music what it is today. We’ll be looking at some of the biggest names in pop music and how they’ve influenced the genre as a whole.

The Beatles

Without a doubt, The Beatles are one of the most influential bands in the history of pop music. They not only wrote great songs, but they also pioneered new recording techniques and pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in popular music. They are truly a legendary band.

Their impact on pop music

The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band in history. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later utilised several genres, ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. In 1963 their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication it led to claims of impending artistic greatness.

During their initial years with EMI Records in the UK and Capitol Records in the US, the Beatles released songs that became both popular worldwide hits and cultural markers of the early 1960s. Their record-breaking appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show marked the beginning of what cultural historian Rayculus calls “the British Invasion” of American popular music. As early as 1965, their songwriting already manifested a sophistication that set them apart from their contemporaries. By early 1966 they were international stars, leading the “mid-60s musical “British Invasion” into the United States”. The Beatles quit touring that year as Beatlemania subsided; many attributed this decision to rampant drug use among band members (notably Harrison’s introduction of LSD) coupled with mounting public disturbance at their live performances caused by screaming fans—a phenomenon termed “Beatlemania”. They continued making highly innovative recordings until their acrimonious break-up in 1970.

After a decade of feuding following their split, they each released solo albums that quickly became critical successes; Lennon was murdered less than a month after his album Imagine (1971) was released. McCartney’s album RAM (1971) topped charts worldwide; Harrison’s All Things Must Pass (1970) featured major contributions from Starr and became one of history’s most critically acclaimed double albums; Starr’s album Beacons of Antiquity (1970) featured contributions from all three surviving members of the group and was eventual certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA). Following Lennon’s murder, Starr stopped touring for over two decades but continued making sporadic guest appearances on stage or television. The Beatles have sold more than 800 million records worldwide—more than any other band—and hold 17 Guinness World Records—more than any other musical act—including “Most Popular Recording Artists”, “Most Successful Songwriters”, and “Most Successful Singles Artists”. They have also received numerous awards throughout their career including seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score: A Hard Day’s Night (1964), sixteen Ivor Novello Awards—two prestigious lifetime achievement awards—and induction into both the Rock & Roll Hall Fame (1988) National Broadcasting Corporation(NBC)’s Saturday Night Live(1975) w/ host Paul Simon.”The Beatles are considered pop culture icons who changed not just music but also fashion while touring throughout North America during 1963–64.. They are also credited with having been part reality TV show before such programs even existed”.
