In 1974, German electronic music band Kraftwerk released their single “Autobahn”, which contained the first electronic dance music ever recorded. The song became an instant hit, reaching the top of the charts in several countries. “Autobahn” was later included on the band’s fourth studio album, Radio-Activity (1975), which is widely considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

On this day in 1977, “I Feel Love” by Giorgio Moroder is released as a single by Casablanca Records. The record, written and produced by Moroder with lyrics by Donna Summer, is widely credited as the first disco song to use a drum machine and synthesizer throughout its entire duration and is considered one of the most influential records in dance music history.
The song was recorded in just three days using a brand-new synthesizer, the Minimoog Model D, which was played by Moroder himself. The synth bassline, which has since become one of the most iconic and imitated basslines in dance music, was played using just two notes: C and D. The lyrics were inspired by a news report about the growing popularity of disco dancing in Northern England that Summer had seen on television.
“I Feel Love” was an instant hit, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It remains one of the most popular disco songs of all time and has been covered and sampled numerous times by artists including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson and LCD Soundsystem.
