His life

John Coltrane was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions during his career, and appeared as a sideman on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane’s music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension. He remains one of the most influential saxophonists in music history, and played a major role in the development of avant-garde jazz.

Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, on September 23, 1926. His father was John R. Coltrane and his mother was Alice Blair. He grew up in a household with his parents and younger sister Mary for the first seven years of his life until his father moved to Philadelphia for work in 1933. His aunt Viola Coltrane then became a constant figure in Coltrane’s life from age seven until she died when he was 21 years old.

After finishing high school, he joined the Navy in 1945 where he played clarinet and tenor saxophone in the band for two years before being honorably discharged in 1947. He then studied under legendary pedagogue Dennis Sandole for several years before embarking on his professional career as a musician.

Coltrane rose to prominence during his tenure with Miles Davis’s band from 1955 to 1961 as part of Davis’s “First Great Quintet”, which also featured pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. During this time he also began developing his own distinctive sound on the tenor saxophone which would come to be known as “sheets of sound”. After leaving Davis’s group, he continued to toured Europe with Thelonious Monk’s band before rejoining Davis’s group later that year where he remained until 1967 when he left again to form his own quartet featuring pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones which would become one of the most important groups in jazz history.

During this time Coltrane also became increasingly interested in spirituality and religion which is reflected in both his personal life and music. In 1966 he had begun studying Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Transcendental Meditation which deeply affected both him and his music; later that year he met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who would become an important spiritual mentor for him over the next few years. His 1967 albumEdit>Expression features overtly religious themes however it did not receive much commercial success upon its release. Undeterred, he continued to explore religious themes on subsequent albums such as A Love Supreme (1964) which is widely considered one of the greatest jazz albums ever made..

John Coltrane died unexpectedly on July 17, 1967 at the age of 40 from liver cancer. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993
