Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin is often referred to as The Queen of Soul or Lady Soul. She is a multi-Grammy Award winning musician who has released more than 40 studio albums. Franklin’s music has spanned a number of genres including R&B, pop, rock, blues, and gospel. Her hits include “Respect”, “A Natural Woman”, and “I Say a Little Prayer”.

“Respect”

“Respect” is a song written and originally released by Otis Redding in 1965. The song became a 1967 hit and signature song for R&B singer Aretha Franklin. The music in the two versions is significantly different, and through a few changes in the lyrics, the stories told by the songs also differ.

Redding’s version is a plea from a desperate man, who will give his woman anything she wants to keep her from leaving him. He opens the song saying “All I’m askin’ is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)” and closes it with the repeated phrase “R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.”

In Franklin’s version, she changed the pronoun from “you” to “me,” making it clear that she is not asking for respect, but demanding it. She also adds the first verse from Redding’s original song (“I’m about to give you all of my money / And all I’m askin’ in return, honey”), but turns it around so that instead of being about what her man can do for her, it becomes about what she has done for him (“See, I’m about to give you all of my money / And all I’m askin’ of you, honey, Is to give me my propers”). And while Redding asked for respect when he came home, Franklin demands respect “all day long.”

“I Say a Little Prayer”

Aretha Franklin’s “I Say a Little Prayer” is one of the defining songs of the 1980s. The song was originally released in 1967, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became a massive hit. The song was re-released in 1986 and reached the top 10 in the United Kingdom, Australia, and several other countries. “I Say a Little Prayer” is a classic example of soul music, and it helped to cement Aretha Franklin’s reputation as one of the greatest soul singers of all time.
