The ’90s Techno Scene

The ’90s Techno scene was filled with a lot of great music. Unfortunately, it was also filled with a lot of bad band names. In this article, we will take a look at some of the worst band names from the ’90s Techno scene.

The birth of techno

The first Detroit techno tracks were produced in the mid-late 1980s by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, who became known as the Belleville Three. By the early 1990s, techno had spread around the world to London, Berlin, The Hague, Rotterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Tokyo and many other cities. The music was also increasingly being referred to as “electronica”, a name suggested by British music journalist Simon Reynolds in a May 1992 issue of UK magazine Melody Maker.

The rise of the rave culture

By the early 1990s, the rave culture in England had begun to evolve from a predominantly white, middle-class youth movement into a more ethnically and socio-economically diverse scene. The music became more syncopated and techno bands began to sample and incorporate elements of other genres, including hip hop and house music. This new style of music was embraced by a wider audience, and the technoscene became one of the most popular subcultures in England.

However, not everyone was happy with the direction that the techno scene was taking. Some members of the original rave culture felt that the new style of music was too commercialized and watered down. They also disapproved of the increasingly diverse crowd that was attending techno events. In response to these changes, some members of the techno scene began to form their own subculture, which they called “the hardtechno scene.”

The hardtechno scene was characterized by its focus on underground parties and DIY ethic. Hardtechno DJs and producers often made their own music using simple equipment, such as drum machines and synthesizers. The hardtechno sound was darker and more industrial than mainstream techno, and it soon began to attract a small but devoted following.

However, the hardtechno scene was not without its controversies. Many hardtechno fans were accused of being elitist and exclusive, and some parties were shut down by authorities for being too rowdy. Nevertheless, the hardtechno scene continues to thrive in Europe and North America, attracting fans from all walks of life who share a love for dark, underground techno music.
