Franklin was born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 26, 1970. He started singing in his church choir at the age of four and by the age of seven he was already leading the choir. After graduating from high school, he attended Oral Roberts University on a gospel music scholarship. He withdrew from college after one semester to pursue a career in music full time.
Franklin’s first album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, was released in 1993. His second album, Christmas in Blacksburg, was released in 1995 and featured a mixture of traditional Christmas carols and original songs written by Franklin himself.
