The 1975
The 1975 is an English alternative rock band from Manchester, consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, drummer George Daniel, and lead guitarist Adam Hann. The band’s origins date to 2002 when Healy, Daniel, and Hann met at Wilmslow High School in Wilmslow, Cheshire. They began playing covers as a band called “Mean Girls” before settling on their current name in 2012.
The group signed to Dirty Hit Records—an independent label which is co-owned by Healy’s manager Jamie Oborne—in September 2012 and released their debut EP Facedown. Their eponymous debut album was released on 2 September 2013 and charted at number one in both the UK Albums Chart and Billboard Alternative Albums chart; as well as peaking within the top 10 of numerous other countries’ national album charts. The album was certified platinum in both the UK and US by January 2016. It was followed by I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It in February 2016; the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200—becoming the first album by a British band to do so since Oasis’s Be Here Now in 1997—and reached similar peaks in nineteen other countries.
