Drake wrote the song with its producers Nineteen85 and Charlie Handsome. record it at Sugar Beach Studios in Toronto with engineer Noel Cadastre. In an interview for Beats 1, Drake described “Hotline Bling” as flirtatious and said that he initially wrote it from the perspective of a woman who goes out every night despite having a man at home. The song’s conception was inspired by Drake seeing how many ex-girlfriends he still has calling him despite having moved on romantically; the hotline refers to their phone calls being a booty call because they are available whenever he wants them sexually despite no longer being in a relationship with them. The song’s lyrics also refer to late nights at home alone missing someone who is not with you sexually or romantically anymore due to their current romantic partner living further away than you; this is especially relevant for long-distance relationships where one person cannot visit the other person as often as they want to due to distance separating them (in Drake’s case he would be in Toronto while his girlfriend would be in another city).
