Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, retired from touring in 2016 due to health problems. In a statement posted on his website Friday, his family said he had “passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday morning.”
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” the statement said. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
Bergling’s cause of death was not immediately known.
Avicii was nominated for two Grammy Awards and won several MTV Video Music Awards. In 2013, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on Le7els.
In an interview with CNN in 2016, Bergling spoke about his decision to retire from touring.
“I know I am blessed to be able to even tour at all,” he said. “I have been doing this since I was 16 and I feel like I have accomplished enough.”
