In 1965, he wrote the song “Sweet Little Sixteen” in response to the racist attacks on Freedom Riders in the south; the song became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement. In 1972, he testified before Congress in support of an anti-payola bill that would level the playing field for black musicians who were often excluded from radio airplay because they couldn’t pay bribes to get their songs played.
