Collective Soul is an American rock band originally formed in Stockbridge, Georgia, in 1992 by singer/guitarist Ed Roland and drummer/percussionist Dean Roland with bassist Will Turpin, rhythm guitarist Ross Childress and lead guitarist Johnny Rabb. The band’s name comes from a line in Duration of a Kiss by Allen Ginsberg: “I believe in the collective unconsciousness of all mankind.”
Rabb left the band in 2001 before the recording of their seventh studio album, Blender, and was replaced by Joel Kosche.childress left the band beforeosche’s arrival, but rejoined Collective Soul in time to tour for Blender. After taking another hiatus due to frontman Roland’s back surgery in late 2003, Collective Soul reconvened for their eighth album Youth on December 4, 2004. Exemplifying this new direction was first single “Counting The Days”, which still retains some musical resemblance to past hits while adding a more polished pop sound. More heavy guitar distortion can be heard on the second single “Better Now”. Upon its release on June 21, 2005, Youth debuted at number five on Billboard magazine’s Top 200 chart.
