We are one of the largest, most active folk music societies in the country, with over 2,500 members and supporters. We present monthly concerts and dances featuring local, regional, and national touring artists, as well as workshops and other events throughout the year. We also provide educational opportunities for both children and adults through our outreach programs.
The Dallas Folk Music Society is run entirely by volunteers who believe in the power of music to bring people together. We welcome everyone to join us in our mission to nurture the folk arts and ensure their continued vitality for generations to come.
What We Do
The Dallas Folk Music Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional music of cultures from around the world. We are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff.
We host two public music events each month, one on the first Saturday and one on the third Tuesday. These events typically feature live music, dance, storytelling, and other cultural entertainment. They are always held in Dallas-area locations that are convenient, accessible, and reasonably priced. You do not have to be a member of the DFMS to attend our events; everyone is welcome!
In addition to our monthly events, we also offer educational opportunities for those who want to learn more about traditional music and dance. These include workshops, classes, jam sessions, and other special events. While some of our educational offerings are open to the general public, most are available only to members.
If you enjoy traditional music and want to help support our work, please consider becoming a member of the DFMS! Memberships start at just $20 per year for individuals ($35 for families), and include many benefits such as discounts on tickets to our events, free or discounted admission toworkshops and classes, invitations to special members-only events, and much more.
We also rely on donations from individuals and businesses to help fund our work. Donations are tax-deductible (to the extent allowed by law), and can be made online via PayPal or by check (made out to “Dallas Folk Music Society” with “donation” in the memo line).
Our History
The Dallas Folk Music Society was started in 1971 by a group of music lovers who wanted to share their passion for folk music with others. The Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is run entirely by volunteers. We promote folk music through our monthly newsletter, website, and events. We also provide a space for musicians to come together and jam.
How We Got Started
The Dallas Folk Music Society began in February 1980 with a coffeehouse on Lower Greenville Avenue. Since then, we’ve grown to include an annual music festival, an outreach and education program, a contra dance series, jams, and more. Our members come from all walks of life, but we’re united by our love of traditional music and dance. We welcome you to join us at our next event!
