He is also the creator of the software application Final Scratch, which allows DJs to control digital audio files using traditional turntable techniques. Born in Banbury, England, Hawtin moved to Windsor, Ontario, Canada in his early teens and became involved in the local techno scene. In 1989 he founded the record label Plus 8 with John Acquaviva; the label was an important outlet for Hawtin’s own productions as well as those of friends like Jeff Mills and Carl Craig. In the early 1990s Hawtin began performing under the alias F.U.S.E., releasing the album Dimension Intrusion on Warp Records in 1993; he would later return to this project for 1997’s Connected. As Plastikman, Hawtin recorded a series of minimal techno EPs that were released on Plus 8; these were compiled as the full-length Musik (1993) and Recycled Plastik (1995). 1998’s Sheet One was followed by Consumed (1999), both of which saw him experimenting with microhouse textures.
Jeff Mills
Jeff Mills is a Detroit-based techno producer and DJ who is widely considered one of the most important figures in the genre. He was a founder of the legendary underground techno collective Underground Resistance, and has released numerous solo albums and EPs on respected labels like Axis, Tresor, and Soma. Mills is known for his innovative style and commitment to pushing the boundaries of techno music.
