Bristol is a city in south west England with a rich musical heritage. It was home to the Bristol Sound in the 1980s, which was a style of hip hop and electronica. In the 1990s, Bristol was also home totrip hop pioneers Massive Attack and Portishead.

In the early 2000s, a new generation of Bristol musicians started experimenting with dubstep, fusing it with other genres such as grime and drum and bass. These artists included Benga, Skream and Artwork. dubstep began to gain popularity in London clubs in the mid-2000s, and by 2010 it had become a global phenomenon.

Skream

Skream (real name Oliver Dene Jones) is a British electronic music producer based in Croydon. He is widely considered to be one of the first dubstep producers, and his 2002 track “Midnight Request Line” was pivotal in the genre’s development. Skream has also branched out into other genres such as techno, house, and grime.

Benga

Benga is a dubstep producer and DJ from Croydon, London. Born and raised in a musical household, he started experimenting with tracks at the age of fifteen. In 2006, he released his first record, the “Skanka” EP. His track “Night” was included on the dubstep compilation albuminline
“Dubstep Allstars Vol. 3”, mixed by Hatcha. In 2008, Benga released his debut album “Diary of an Afro Warrior”, which reached #66 on the UK Albums Chart.

Burial

Burial is the stage name of William Bevan, a British electronic musician from South London. He debuted with two self-released albums in 2006 and 2007 before receiving critical acclaim for his self-titled album in 2007. His music is characterised by its dark, atmospheric sound and often incorporates samples of ambient and garage music.

Bevan has continued to release music under the Burial name, including the 2013 album Rival Dealer and the 2019 single “Chemz”. He has also released music under the pseudonyms Kode9 and Blackdown.
