Best New Electronic Artists of the Year
2011 was an incredible year for electronic music, with a wide range of artists releasing some truly groundbreaking work. From dubstep and drum & bass to techno and trance, there was something for everyone, and the following ten artists were responsible for some of the best tunes of the year.
Skrillex
The undisputed king of dubstep, Skrillex took the world by storm in 2011 with his unique brand of heavy, bass-driven electronica. His debut album, ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’, was a global hit, spawning a number of chart-topping singles and cementing his place as one of the most exciting new talents in the scene.
Zeds Dead
Canadian duo Zeds Dead had a massive year in 2011, releasing their debut album ‘The Living Dead’ to critical acclaim. The LP showcased their diverse production skills, incorporating elements of dubstep, hip-hop, and drum & bass into their own unique sound. Their track ‘Collapse’ was one of the stand-out tunes of the year.
Nero
British trio Nero had a huge 2011, with their second album ‘Welcome Reality’ debuting at number one in the UK charts. The record saw them moving away from their dubstep roots and embracing a more pop-friendly sound, resulting in a string of hit singles including ‘Promises’ and ‘Guilt’.
Borgore
Israeli producer Borgore continued to make waves in 2011 with his controversial brand of ‘gorestep’. His music is characterized by its heavy use of vulgarity and graphic imagery, which has divided opinion within the electronic community. However there’s no denying his production skills, as evidenced by tracks like ‘Nympho’.
Chase & Status
British drum & bass outfit Chase & Status had another successful year in 2011, releasing their sophomore album ‘No More Idols’ to positive reviews. The record featured a number of high-profile collaborations, including tracks with Plan B (‘End Credits’) and Tinie Tempah (‘Hitz’). Their single ‘Blind Faith’ was also a huge success.
