Genres
Hip hop music, also called rap music, is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing.
There are many different types of hip hop, but all of them share some common ground. The most basic element of hiphop is the beat or rhythm, which comes from a variety of sources including drums, turntables, and synthesizers. In addition to the beat, hip hop has two other key elements: rhyming lyrics delivered in a rapid-fire style called rapping, and scratching, a technique for manipulating sounds on a record player.
