Christmas Music Basics

Christmas music is a genre of festive holiday music that is typically characterized by a certain style, sound, and form. It is performed or heard during the Christmas season. Christmas music generally contains a mixture of religious and secular elements, and often employs a single or multiple musical ensembles or bands, vocal soloists, and instrumental performers.

What is Christmas music?

Christmas music comprises a variety of genres of music normally performed or heard around the Christmas season. Music associated with Christmas may be purely instrumental, or in the case of many carols or songs may employ lyrics whose subject matter ranges from the nativity of Jesus Christ, to gift-giving and merrymaking, to cultural figures such as Santa Claus, among other topics. Performances of Christmas music at public concerts, in churches, at shopping malls, on city streets, and in private gatherings is an integral staple of the Christmas holiday in many cultures across the world.

The history of Christmas music

Christmas music comprises a variety of genres of music normally performed or heard around the Christmas season. Music associated with Christmas is thought to have its origins in 4th century Rome, in Latin-language hymns such as Veni redemptor gentium. By the 13th century, under the influence of Francis of Assisi, the Franciscan order had adopted the three Magi theme into their traditions and taught it to children. In 1223, Pope Gregory IX ordered his assistant Nicolas de Myre to collect and distribute tapes consisting of Christmas carols to be sung during preaching in French churches. Over time, various Christmas carols developed in Europe, incorporating regional forms of dance and theater.

The first known appearance of the carol “Silent Night” was in a small book called Lieder von heiligen drei Königen (“Songs of the Three Kings”), released in Dresden in 1799. “Stille Nacht” was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria by its priest Joseph Mohr and schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber. The song has been translated into many languages and is widely sung all over the world.

In the United States, some popular Christmas carols are “Jingle Bells”, “Deck the Halls”, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, “Up on the Housetop”, ” Silent Night”, and “Joy to the World”. Other popular holiday tunes include:
“Ding Dong Merrily on High”,
“Good King Wenceslas”,
“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”,
“O Come All Ye Faithful/Faithful Friends Rejoice”,
“O Holy Night/Cantique de Noel “,
“What Child Is This?”

The different genres of Christmas music

Christmas music comes in many different genres. These include traditional carols, holiday songs, classical pieces composed specifically for the season, and modern pop songs written about wintertime.

Carols are often sung in churches or by carolers who go door to door. They usually have religious lyrics that celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Classic carols include “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”

Holiday songs are more general in their celebration of wintertime and usually include secular lyrics. Popular holiday songs include “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” and “Winter Wonderland.”

Classical pieces composed for Christmas often have a religious flare, similar to carols. However, they are typically more complex in their composition and instrumentation. Famous Christmas classical pieces include Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker.”

Modern pop songs about Christmas cover a wide range of topics, from simply celebrating the season to bemoaning its stresses. Some popular examples include Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” and Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe.”
