He began singing with a folk-rock group called Stoney Ridge with whom he played guitar and wrote songs. While at university he joined The Ace in the Hole Band, which enjoyed regional success.

Strait began his professional music career as a performer at various honky tonks and clubs around South Texas while still attending university. He eventually signed with MCA Records in Nashville after being discovered by Haggard’s fiddle player Hank Williams III.
