“Amazing Grace”

“Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807). Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life’s path was profoundly changed when he was converted to evangelical Christianity after coming to know Christ in 1748.

As a sailor, Newton had experienced firsthand the horrors of slavery; he had also been involved in the slave trade. In the midst of his guilt and shame, he found forgiveness and redemption from God. Through his newfound faith, Newton finally began to see people of all colors as equal in the eyes of God. He later became an outspoken opponent of slavery and a dedicated philanthropist.

Newton’s famous hymn would go on to become an anthem for both the abolitionist and civil rights movements. In it, he candidly admits his own ignorance and sinfulness while also praising God’s boundless grace and mercy. The simple yet powerful message of “Amazing Grace” has resonated with people around the world for centuries, making it one of the most beloved hymns of all time.

“Peace in the Valley”

“Peace in the Valley” is a song written by Thomas A. Dorsey and released as a single by Red Foley in 1951. Foley’s version was a No. 3 country hit and the first gospel record to sell a million copies. It was among the first gospel records to cross over, hitting No.1 on Billboard’s newly created pop chart, the Most Played C&W by Jockeys chart, as well as No.1 on its Harlem Hit Parade R&B chart. “Peace in the Valley” achieved sales of three million copies, becoming the first gospel record to achieve gold status.

The song has been covered by many artists, most notably by Elvis Presley who recorded it in 1957, released it as part of his Peace in the Valley EP, and included it in his concert film Elvis Presley (1957). Presley’s version reached No.3 on Billboard’s Hot C&W Sides chart and No.37 on its Hot 100 chart and sold one million copies in the United States alone. It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

“I Believe”

I Believe is a ballad composed by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl and Al Stillman. It is best known for its first line, “I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows”, and was originally recorded by Elizar Morales with thepy Believers in 1961.
The song became popularized by Elvis Presley’s recording in 1970. In the same year it charted within the top 40 in Canada, Netherlands and US Billboard Hot 100, while in the UK it reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Seven years later Johnny Cash covered it in an eponymous album release.
It was ranked No. 253 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time published in 2004.

“Crying in the Chapel”

“Crying in the Chapel” is a gospel song written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell to sing. Darrell recorded it while still in high school in 1953, along with Artie’s band the Rhythm Riders. The song was reputedly inspired by a vision of Elvis Presley’s. In 1955, after Presley had become a national sensation, Glenn released the song as a single and it became a hit on both the country and gospel charts. Elvis recorded his own version of the song open at his home studio, Lauderdale Courts on March 16, 1957; it would be released on the posthumous album Moody Blue in 1977.
