Metal has its roots in blues music and has been popular among working-class people since the early 20th century. In the 1950s and 60s, metal was commercialized and began to be associated with teenage rebellion. The metal scene of the 1970s and 80s was dominated by men, but there have been many influential women in metal throughout its history.

In 1972, Black Sabbath’s Master of Realityand Deep Purple’s Machine Head cemented heavy metal’s emergence as a major commercial force. By 1973, Judas Priest had introduced the twin guitar solo to mainstream metal with the release of their debut album Rocka Rolla. In 1974,kiss released their debut album Hotter Than Hell which featured extended guitar solos and simplified power chord riffing which laid the groundwork for both glam metaland thrash metal.

In 1977, Rainbow released their Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll album which was one of the earliest examples of a band incorporating classical influences within hard rock/heavy metal. In 1981, Motörhead released their Ace of Spades album which was considered an important milestone for both speed metaland thrash metal. In 1984, Metallica released their Ride the Lightning album which expanded heavy metal’s aesthetic vortex beyond England and America to include Continental Europe with its many NWOBHM bands such as Diamond Head, Venom , Mercyful Fate , Witchfynde , Gotham City , Tank , Jaguar , Satan , Blitzkrieg , Holocaust , Witchcraft , Elixir ,//AMON// etc
