Psychedelic Rock
Psychedelic rock, also called acid rock or simply psychedelia, is a style of rock music that emerged in the mid-1960s. The style is distinguished by a preoccupation with LSD, marijuana, and other psychedelic drugs; sounded achieved through extended use of feedback, electronics, and distorted guitars; and often incorporated socio-political or surrealist lyrical themes.
What is psychedelic rock?
Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelia, a subculture of people who used psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, mescaline and DMT to experience visual and auditory hallucinations, synesthesia and altered states of consciousness. Psychedelic rock music was popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was often used by psychedelic drug users as a form of “stereo-drug”,enhancing the effect of the drugs.
History of psychedelic rock
Psychedelic rock, also referred to as psychedelia, is a diverse style of rock music distinguished by the use of psychedelic and other mind-altering drugs, such as LSD, peyote, and psilocybin mushrooms. Psychedelic music may aim to replicate the experience of altered consciousness and is often intended to evoke images of dust, space travel, surrealism, and transcendence.
The first psychedelic recordings were made in the mid-1960s, and the style quickly spread around the world. By 1967, it had been co-opted by the commercial music industry and was being used by pop acts such as The Beatles (“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”), The Beach Boys (“Good Vibrations”), and The 13th Floor Elevators (“You’re Gonna Miss Me”). Psychedelic rock reached its peak in popularity during the so-called “Summer of Love” (1967), when many young people took acid for the first time at open-air ROCK festivals such as Monterey Pop and Woodstock.
The use of drugs in popular music declined sharply in the early 1970s as band members became increasingly concerned about drug addiction and legal troubles. Psychedelic rock subsequently disintegrated into a number of individual subgenres, including acid rock, hard rock, jam band/live dead music, noise rock, space rock, proto-punk (such as garage punk), neo-psychedelia (such as Paisley Underground), classic punk (such as garage punk), classic psychedelia (such as San Francisco Sound), stoner rock/metal (such as desert rock) ,and post-psychedelia (such as shoegaze).

The Doors – Strange Days

Pink Floyd – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is the debut album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 5 August 1967 by EMI Columbia in the United Kingdom and Capitol Records in the United States.
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in February and June 1967, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was produced by Pink Floyd’s first producer,Joe Boyd. The majority of the album was written by Syd Barrett, who also provided lead vocals and lead guitar. Barrett’s writings explore topics such as travel, space exploration, science fiction, infant mortality, paranoia and fears of death.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was well received by music critics upon its release and has since been recognised as one of the leading psychedelic albums of all time. In 2003, it was ranked 35th on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. In 2006, the album was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.
